More U.S. fabrication and packaging capacity pledged

July 2022 – The U.S. Accelerates Domestic Semiconductor Manufacturing and Advanced Packaging Capacity

Following the signing of the CHIPS and Science Act in August 2022, semiconductor companies significantly accelerated investments in U.S. manufacturing capacity, aiming to strengthen domestic semiconductor supply chains and reduce dependence on overseas production.

In July 2022, several major semiconductor projects were announced:

Wolfspeed Expands Silicon Carbide Manufacturing in North Carolina

Wolfspeed announced plans to build the world’s largest silicon carbide (SiC) manufacturing facility in North Carolina, representing an investment of approximately US$1.3 billion.

The new facility, covering more than 1 million square feet, is expected to support the growing demand for SiC power semiconductors used in:

  • Electric vehicles (EVs)

  • Renewable energy systems

  • Industrial power applications

  • High-efficiency power electronics

Micron Announces Major Memory Manufacturing Investment

Micron Technology announced a plan to invest US$20 billion to build a new semiconductor manufacturing facility in Clay, New York.

The project had the potential to expand to approximately US$100 billion over 20 years, supported by significant government incentives, including up to US$5.5 billion in New York State tax credits.

The investment focuses on expanding domestic production of advanced memory technologies, including DRAM, to support future demand from:

  • Artificial intelligence infrastructure

  • Data centers

  • Automotive electronics

  • High-performance computing

Industry Impact

These investments marked a significant shift in the global semiconductor landscape.

The semiconductor industry entered a new phase where manufacturing capacity, supply chain security, and geographic diversification became strategic priorities alongside technology innovation.

For global electronics manufacturers, the key challenge is no longer only access to advanced technology — but also ensuring:

✅ Stable component availability
✅ Reliable supply chain partnerships
✅ Long-term lifecycle support
✅ Flexible sourcing strategies

HUADA Electronics continues to monitor global semiconductor developments and support customers with reliable sourcing solutions for ICs, memory, SSDs, HDDs, and hard-to-find components.
