July 2022 – After the CHIPS Act passed, Wolfspeed announced construction of the world’s largest silicon-carbide plant in North Carolina, with estimated costs of US $1.3 billion and over a million square feet. At the same time, Micron Technology committed US $20 billion to build a chip factory in Clay, New York—potentially scaling to US $100 billion over 20 years—supported by $5.5 billion in state tax credits.
